Weekday Hours Restored To City Libraries
The 73 Los Angeles city libraries will restore some of their weekday hours starting Monday, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced in a press conference at Central Library.
The new hours include Monday and Wednesday evenings and Friday mornings, beginning Monday, Oct. 15.
This marks the second of four phases in Measure L, a ballot initiative passed last March that seeks to restore library services and funds.
" We're all so excited that we're re-opening our Monday and Wednesday evening hours, thanks to the success of Measure L," said Teen Services librarian Candice Mack.
According to a press release from the Los Angeles Public Libraries, operating hours were at an all time low in August 2010 after cuts in the city budget. Measure L will restore library hours for over four years by increasing the amount of city funding without raising taxes.
The first phase of Measure L was completed last year when all libraries re-opened on Mondays. The final stage, set for 2014, will re-open nine libraries on Sundays.
