UPDATE: Suspects Detained in Downey Family Shootings

Officials have confirmed that two are dead and at least three more injured after two separate shootings in Downey on Wednesday.

Update Thursday Oct. 25

Police have detained four people who may have been involved in the incident. They were not immediately arrested in connection with the shootings.

Update 4:59 p.m.
The victims of a shooting in Downey Wednesday were all members of the same family, according to Downey police Lt. Dean Milligan.

"We do not believe that this was a random act of violence," Milligan said. "We do believe that for some reason this family was targeted both at their place of business and their residence. We do not know why at this point."

Dean Wright, a neighbor, told NBC4 that the suspect shot a mother and daughter at the family's business.

Downey police said the gunman fled in a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro with license plate 6LEA010.

Update 3:03 p.m.

Police confirmed that five people were shot and three died in a connected pair of attacks at a business and home in Downey, Calif. The shootings took place at the premises of the United States Fire Protection Services and business's owner, said Downey police Lt. Dean Milligan.

Police said a woman was killed at the home while a man and woman were killed at United States Fire Protection Services.

The gunman escaped in a black Camaro owned by one of the victims or victim's family members, said police. None of the two surviving victims recognized the gunman, said police.

Update 1:12 p.m.

Mayor Roger Brossmer released a statement on behalf of the Downey City Council regarding Wednesday's fatal shooting.

"We were saddened to learn that a shooting has occurred in the City of Downey.  The investigation is still underway, and many details are not yet clear," said Brossmer. "Our police department has set up a command post and is actively managing the situation."

Original Story 12:45 p.m.

At least two people were killed and three others injured in two separate shooting incidents in Downey Wednesday afternoon.

The shootings occurred at 11:25 a.m. and officials have confirmed that two people are dead and at least three others have been transported to local hospitals.  The injuries are unknown at this time.

Downey resident Dean Wright lives next to where one of the shootings took place. He said he didn't hear shots, but when he looked outside "police had surrounded the building."

According to Wright, the building where the shooting occurred housed a family-owned US fire extinguisher business.  He did not know any further details about the shooting.

Downey High School and Warren High School are not on lock down following the incident.
