Beckham's Galaxy Departure
"United States sports is all about having stars," said USC senior Seth Rubinroit. "The biggest problem the galaxy will have is trying to find a star to replace him."
In a Galaxy statement published Monday, the team said Beckham helped "lead the club to three MLS Cup berths" among other accomplishments.
Since the 37-year-old joined the Galaxy in 2007, one of his biggest challenges was increasing the popularity of American soccer.
Rubinroit, an avid soccer fan, notes that Beckham was an "icon playing throughout Europe." After Beckham's arrival to the U.S., his personal brand gained popularity and major league soccer experienced record growth.
His departure from the team, however, doesn't worry USC junior John D'Angelo.
"While Beckham's contributions have been important, he's been more of a media ploy and a method to attract fans," said D'Angelo.
Beckham said Tuesday he already has multiple offers to continue his soccer career after he leaves the Galaxy next month.
USC junior Josh Faskowtiz is certain Beckham will maintain his "marketability" due to underwear and clothing campaigns with retailers such as H&M and Calvin Klein.
Beckham has played six seasons with the Galaxy and says he aspires to take an ownership role with the team down the road.
