With this past week’s Black Friday hitting a record-breaking $1 billion dollars in sales, expectations are high for Cyber Monday to continue along this exceptional trajectory.

Cyber Monday is another event in the post-Thanksgiving week of sales and hysteria that jumpstarts the Christmas season. The day focuses specifically on online commerce. Most online retailers offer sales and deals to entice shoppers. According to a report, this year’s Cyber Monday is expected to accrue over $1.5 billion.

According to analysis firm comScore, online retail spending on Black Friday experienced a 26 percent increase from 2011, with 57.3 million Americans engaging in cyber commercialism.

Throughout the month of November, online retail levels have increased 16 percent from last year, with a 32 percent jump on Thanksgiving alone.

Retailers are certainly pulling out all the stops for customers this Cyber Monday. Amazon, the most visited site on Black Friday, is offering up to 90 percent off on hot-ticket items in their limited-time-only “Lightning Deals.” Macy’s has a 15 percent off everything sale, plus free shipping on orders over $75. JCPenney and Anthropologie on the other hand, are offering free shipping no matter the purchase.

Black Friday favorites like Walmart, Kohls, and Target are extending the sales for seven days, a marketing technique now dubbed “Cyber Week.”

While the numbers for Cyber Monday will not be available until Tuesday, comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoli believes it holds higher potential than Black Friday.  “Despite the frenzy of media coverage surrounding the importance of Black Friday in the brick-and-mortar world, we continue to see this shopping day become more and more prominent in the e-commerce channel, particularly among those who prefer to avoid crowds at stores," he said in an online statement.
