Disney Janitors on Strike After 70 Workers Laid Off

Janitors gathered outside Walt Disney Studios to protest Disney laying off over 70 workers.

United Service Workers West protested outside Walt Disney Studios at the corner of W. Alameda Avenue and Lincoln Street in Burbank Tuesday and voted to authorize a strike if Disney fails to rehire all workers.

"Ive dedicated most of my life working at disney so that I and my family can have a better life," said Gabriel Gonzalez.

Gonzalez had been a janitor at Disney for the last 25 years. "Walt Disney Studios is a place where movie magic is created to bring families closer together," Gonzalez explained. "Firing all of us without helping us secure a place in the new company is wrong. We will not be silent."

The security officers and janitors currently work for contractors who clean real estate landlord and corporate tenant offices. Over the last 10 years, workers who make up USWW have gained health care benefits and increased their wages above poverty.

Disney does not guarantee that the workers will keep their jobs or benefits when a cleaning service provider takes over next week.

SEIU United Service Workers West currently represents more than 40,000 airport service workers, security officers, janitors and other property service workers in California. There are more than two million members in North America.

Disney said in a statement, "The 68 impacted workers have been offered comparable positions to their current jobs with Able Service, the largest privately held buiding services provider in the United States. Able, which currently services other Disney locations, has a collective bargaining agreement with SEIU United Service Workers West."

COMMENTS

It's happen like that however the Walt Disney is not they fault ever it they have to go to the union however the need a job back as soon a possible the people doesn't know that it suppost to pay that company of the union

The article stays they were all offered jobs, then why strike?

The article also says there jobs are not guarantee once they work under Able management. If I was one of those 70 works losing benefits I would strike too. Disney is being unfair ..
