UPDATE: UCLA No Longer As Unsafe According To Business Insider

UCLA officials disagree with a list labeling the campus as the most dangerous in the country.

UPDATE | Nov. 28, 2012 10:46 P.M. PST:

After disgruntled UCLA students and faculty expressed doubt over being ranked the #1 most crime-prone campus by Business Insider, the study was reviewed and the rankings have been altered. Howard University is now #1 and UCLA moved all the way down to #24.

According to Business Insider, "UCLA and UC-Riverside, among others on the list, complained about our using data that was not limited to on-campus crime. The FBI data on which we based our ranking is compiled from crime data submitted by colleges across the country."

UCLA and UC-Riverside, among others on the list, complained about our using data that was not limited to on-campus crime.

In response to complaints, Business Insider reviewed the study and limited data to on-campus crime however many of the same schools appear in the newly published list.

Business Insider concluded by saying that while they are glad to provide a second set of rankings, they are confident in their original list of America's Most Dangerous Colleges.

school is disputing the claim.

The website Business Insider used FBI crime statistics from every public university with over 10,000 students to compile its list. From 2008 to 2011, UCLA had an average of 49 violent crimes and 921 property crimes a year.

Per capita, UCLA had more crimes than any other public school, according to Business Insider.

A spokesperson from UCLA, however, is disputing the validity of the list.

Officials say the website took crime statistics from the campus police report, but did not adjust these statistics to consider the UCLA police department's large policing area. UCLA police officers patrol not only the campus, but also neighboring residential areas, businesses and hospitals.

Furthermore, spokesperson Phil Hampton says UCLA's neighborhood of Westwood is statistically one of the lowest crime neighborhoods in Los Angeles County.

"Safety is a top priority at UCLA facilities," Hampton said, "and everyone in the campus community — students, faculty, staff, visitors — is encouraged to report all crimes."

Several other California schools made the list, including UC Berkeley (#3), San Diego State University (#7), Cal State Fresno (#19), and UC Riverside (#24).
