CNN Heroes Come to Annenberg
Annenberg Alchemy invited directors and board members of organizations recognized by CNN Heroes to campus Tuesday to teach them more about the business of helping.
"As a small non-profit, it's really difficult to get the resources to actually build your capacity and this does that excellently," Susan Burton said.
Burton started a housing project for women fresh out of prison. She wants to give them a new start she said.
Another CNN Hero, Razia Jan, helps girls in Afghanistan school she founded. She said she will use the Alchemy program to educate the next generation of leaders.
"I want to continue. I want to focus on a smaller number of girls so they tomorrow become leaders."
Mary Cortani, another CNN hero, said she will use the new techniques to expand her non-profit. She founded Operation Freedom Paws, a group that pairs veterans with PTSD with service dogs.
"The need is great and traditional models aren't going to meet that need," Cortani said. "We need to do more and in order to do that we need to expand."
The director of the global soap project and CNN Hero Derreck Kayongo said he hopes to continue the work he's started. His group recycles used hotel soap and sends it to developing countries to prevent the spread of disease.
"If we were able to put a bar of soap in their hands and teach them how to wash their hands we could reduce these diareahal diseases by forty percent. If we recycle that soap I think we can hit that forty percent," Kayongo said.
This is the first time Alchemy has teamed up with CNN Heroes. The program has been successful in helping Los Angeles County non-profits raise more money.
