New Los Angeles County District Attorney Sworn In

Jackie Lacey accepted her new post as the county's first female and African-American district attorney.

Los Angeles County's new district attorney was be sworn in Monday at the University of Southern California's Galen Center.

Jackie Lacey is the first female and first African-American to hold this position. She defeated Deputy District Attorney Alan Jackson in November.

Lacey, who has worked in the District Attorney's office since 1986, is a Los Angeles native and a graduate of the USC Gould School of Law. She has prosecuted over 60 felony cases, most notably the county's first trial of a race-motivated hate crime.

She is taking the reigns from Steve Cooley, who has served three consecutive terms as Los Angeles County's D.A.

Lacey will be accompanied at the ceremony by Cooley and four additional predecessors: Gil Garcetti, Ira Reiner, Robert Philibosian and John Van de Kamp.
