USC President C.L. Max Nikias embarked on a three day trip to Sao Paulo, Brazil Monday where the university will open its eighth international office.
Nikias and a delegation of deans and trustees are eager to build a stronger relationship for a mutually-beneficial collaboration.
The delegation includes the USC Marshall School of Business Dean James G. Ellis; Viterbi School of Engineering Dean Yannis C. Yortsos; School of Cinematic Arts Dean Elizabeth Daley; and Price School of Public Policy Dean Jack H. Knott. Trustees accompanying them are David and Dana Dornsife, John and Julie Mork, Frank Cruz and Ed and Gayle Roski.
"Brazil will play a particularly vital role in these partnerships, given its strategic location in the Pacific Rim, and USC's ambition to attract the world's most talented and creative students," said Nikias.
Nikias will sign an agreement between the Metropolitan Development Secretary of the State of Sao Paulo and the USC Price School of Public Policy. Additionally, the University of Sao Paulo will sign a statement endorsing an international consortium initiated by the USC engineering school.
"This is an important expansion of our relationship with Brazil which will lead to increased collaborations between USC and Brazilian researchers," said Anthony Bailey, vice provost for global initiatives at USC.
The new USC office, located in the Vila Olimpia district of Sao Paulo, will be a home to recruit top-tier students and will promote research.
USC hosts more than 9,000 international students representing 115 countries.
"The Sao Paulo office will be a catalyst for the growth of USc partnerships in research and academics as well as for recruiting top Brazilian students to USC in Los Angeles," said Bailey.
