Search for Dorner Ends

The discovery of charred remains in a cabin near Big Bear caps off a six-day manhunt for the man accused of killing four people.

Charred remains were discovered at the burned cabin near Big Bear where Christopher Dorner was believed to be hiding during a shootout Tuesday. San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon described the shoot out as a "war zone" at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

The cabin is located in a wooded area on Seven Oaks Road just off Highway 38 near Big Bear. Officers say they did not intentionally burn down the house, but they did deploy two tear gas canisters, including a pyrotechnic flammable-type.

"The investigation is over and we will move on from here," said McMahon.

Discovery of the human remains has prompted the Los Angeles Police Department to call of the manhunt for Dorner, the former LAPD officer accused of killing four people as an act of vengeance against the department.

Among those killed was 35 year-old deputy Jeremiah MacKay, a father of two who served for 13 years.

LAPD families remain under special protection until authorities confirm the remains are actually those of the 33-year-old Dorner.

"The LAPD has now moved back into a normal state of police operation,'' said LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman during a press conference outside department headquarters.

Police said they are currently investigating whether Dorner was assisted in the alleged murders. Authorities would not say whether anyone will receive the more than $1 million reward offered for information leading to Dorner's arrest and conviction.

The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department is conducting forensic tests to determine the identity of the burnt human remains. San Bernardino Sheriff John McMahon will hold a press conference at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at department headquarters to discuss the status of the forensic examination.

The onset of the forensic tests marks the end of a six-day search for Dorner who is accused of killing an Irvine couple, one Riverside police officer, and shooting two deputies and killing one deputy in the San Bernardino sheriff's department.

Dorner is also accused of stealing one vehicle, carjacking a second vehicle after tying up two housekeepers in a home on the 1200 block of Club View Drive in Big Bear.

COMMENTS

I read several articles about the giant Police Killer Christ Dorner and my own opinion is that the man was not like what he was made by the LAPD and the end was really too bad for the deceased police men, their families and the department herself. The person who really cried of beating a mentally ill man during his training period cannot become a giant killer. If the LAPD has used services of a wise, psychologist to resolve the issue amicably at the first place rather than torturing Dorner for 3 long years and finally firing him when he did not resign. Still there is time for the LAPD to change the course and come out from their own ego and resolve such personal issues sensibly.
