Documents Released Detail Newtown Shootings
New information about the Newtown Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was released Thursday, confirming that the shooting took place in under 300 seconds.
Adam Lanza is charged with the killing of his mother, 20 elementary school children, and six adults before taking his own life.
Prosecutors released multiple documents Thursday related to the December 2012 Newtown shooting. According to State Attorney Stephen J. Sedensky III, less than five minutes elapsed from the time Lanza entered the elementary school building to the time he turned the gun on himself.
The documents also showed that police discovered a gun safe in Lanza's room as well as 1,400 rounds of ammunition in his home.
Lanza's mother, Nancy Lanza, kept a wide variety of weapons in her home, ranging from assault rifles to handguns. Nancy was described as a responsible gun owner who had guns for self defense. In previous years, she often frequented gun ranges with her son.
Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy spoke out Thursday morning about the importance of gun safety.
"This is exactly why we need to ban high capacity magazines and why we need to tighten our assault weapons ban," Malloy said. "I don't know what more we can need to know before we take decisive action to prevent gun violence. The time to act is now."
Lanza was often decribed as quiet, smart, and socially awkward. Connecticut's medical experts say that Lanza had Asperger's syndrome, however research has not shown a connection between his condition and violence.
The motive for his attack still remains unknown. State poilce are still continuing their investigation and are not expected to be done until June.
