LAX Unveils Three New Aircraft Gates
Nine of the new aircraft gates will be designed to accomodate larger aircraft such as the AirBus 380 Super Jumbo and the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental. The gates are also integrated with new laser-guided docking technology and passenger boarding bridges using automated, computerized technology.
Arriving Singapore Airline Flight 12 will be the first aircraft in the country to check-in and use the newly built gate as well as its updated function.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will be at LAX to personally oversee the unveiling of the three new aircraft gates.
LAX is currently undergoing a $4.1 billion airport modernization program, covering everything from new LED light bands installments to remodelling aircraft gates. LAX has been investing $270 million since 2009 to update the escalators and moving walkways infront of the International Terminal and throughout the entire Central Terminal Area. The state-of-the-art units are designed with sustainable technology to be energy-efficient.
LAX is the sixth-busiest airport in the world and third in the United States. It ranks 13th in the world in air cargo tonnage processed.
