Compton Mayoral Race Under Way
Compton residents took to the polling booths Tuesday to vote to elect the city's next mayor.
Three-term incumbent Eric Perrodin is in the running for another term, but faces 11 other candidates including a former child actor and an ex-mayor awaiting trial on corruption charges.
The city has recently dealt with a massive budget deficit, which resulted in many layoffs of municipal workers and cuts to city services.
Difficulties throughout the city of Compton have sparked interest in bringing fresh faces to City Hall.
Former Mayor Omar Bradley, who was convicted and sent to prison for misusing thousands of dollars in public funding 10 years ago, has gathered an enormous amount of attention this election season.
Known as the "gangster mayor," Bradley had his conviction overturned last year, but prosecutors plan to retry him, meaning that if he is elected and convicted, he would have to step down.
"When I was mayor, were the streets filled with potholes?" Bradley said in his ballot statement. "Back then, did your street sweeper run on time? Were your trees trimmed and your sidewalks repaired? Were there new trash cans, trash trucks and fire trucks? More importantly, was there ever a layoff or a deficit? Now ask yourself, is the same true today?"
Another candidate is Rodney Allen Rippy, a former child star most well-known for his appearances in Jack in the Box commercials.
Also in the running for mayor are Aja Brown, an urban planner; Jeremy Burton, an aerospace engineer; Charles Davis, a former city clerk; B. Kwaku Duren, an attorney; Charles Strickland, a historical documentation director; Jacquelyn DeLoatch, a business owner; Calvin Moore, a real estate broker; and incumbent Perrodin.
Unless a single candidate emerges as the majority winner in Tuesday's election, a runoff between the top two candidates will be held June 4.
Omar Brady, ! any vote for him is a fools vote
