USC Hires Andy Enfield as Head Basketball Coach
USC has hired former Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield as their new head basketball coach, the school announced Monday night.
The hiring was first reported by Sports Illustrated.
Enfield led FGCU to the Sweet-16 in the NCAA Basketball Tournament last week, upseting No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State en route. FGCU became the first school since Florida in 1987 to win the first two NCAA tournament games it ever played.
"Andy's success this season at Florida Gulf Coast was not a flash in the pan," said USC athletic director Pat Haden in a statement. "His brand of basketball--an up-tempo offense and a stingy defense--is fun for players to play and fans to watch. He is an excellent fit at USC who will resonate well with our players, our fans and our community."
Enfield was 41-28 in his two seasons at FGCU, and the uptempo style of play run by Enfield captivated basketball fans accross the country, as the Eagles became know as "Dunk City" as a result of their impressive dunks and even more thrilling alley-oops. The Eagles scored 70 points or more 26 times in 2013 (USC scored 70-plus just nine times), and their 8.9 steals per game were good for 16th nationally.
"My family and I are thrilled to join the Trojan Family and be part of the unparalleled athletic tradition at USC," Enfield said in a statement. "I am looking forward to bringing an exciting, up-tempo style of play to USC and building the men's basketball brand into one that the fans and basketball community will enjoy and respect."
Before earning a head coaching spot at FGCU, Enfield spent five years as an assistant at Florida State, spearheading three-straight top-25 recruiting classes. He also was an assistant with the NBA's Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks for two years each.
