Governor Brown Enacts a New Bike Law

Governor Brown signs new law to help protect bicyclists on the roads.

Cars are now required to maintain 3 feet of distance from cyclists when passing, according to a new California law enacted by Governor Jerry Brown on Monday.

The California Bicycling Coalition was at the forefront of the promotional efforts for the bill with the campaign "Give Me 3."

Gardena Assemblyman Steven Bradford was the first to propose the measure, officially known as the Three Feet for Safety Act which was designed to protect bicyclists in the face of ever-crowded highways.

Before Monday, the law stated that drivers must pass at a "safe distance." Now, that safe distance is clearly defined as 3 feet.

While the law clearly states that drivers must stay 3 feet away from bicyclists, it does clarifty that this clause it dependent on traffic and roadway conditions. Should a 3 feet distance not be feasible, drivers are instructed to "slow to a speed that is reasonable and prudent" before proceeding in front of the cyclist.

The law will take effect next September.

COMMENTS

Jerry Brown is an Idiot to pass this, From my experience their are A LOT of aggressive and RUDE riders who who violate the bike laws so before anything else Do a FULL investigation on how they Violate their own rules, this is a terrible idea because they should have rules how far out they can be from a parked care on a one lane road.
This means they can go where they want and no matter how far they are out or they violate the bike laws you must stay 3 feet way from them. I see bikers on the wrong side of the roads, run red lights and stop signs almost daily, i see them side by side BS ing, chatting when they should be in a single file, but yet this causes one of them to be outside of the bike lane when they should be in it.And they disrespect full attitudes when their in the wrong but you couldn't tell them that, their the cause of a lot of their own accidents. Where do the people get to vote on this ? do they NOT have a say, Mr. Brown , You are NOT GOD, if you were a people person or cared you'd allow for riders investigations be for making thing worst.
