Friends Mourn Murdered South LA Woman, Question LAPD
Neighbors and friends of Martha Sanchez, a woman fatally shot earlier this week, mourned Thursday the mother of five's senseless death as police vowed to track down her killer.
Sanchez was working as a clerk at the Happy Bargain discount store located on the 7400 block of Broadway Boulevard in South L.A. when she was killed Tuesday night. The store is two blocks away from the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Station.
Friends of Sanchez say they'd like to see more officers in the community to prevent such gun violence.
"Soak up the area with police" said Obryan Cordoba. "They're like two blocks away and they could do something more for the community."
Police said that the close proximity of the murder to a station does not change the fundamental issues raised by the killing.
"It doesn't matter if we are two blocks away or two miles away - we are all accountable for those issues," said LAPD Det. Christopher Barling.
Police said they are reviewing hours of surveillance footage in order to identify and arrest the gunman, who is described as an African American male in his 30s.
