Californians Drop Down for Great ShakeOut
Millions of Californians stopped what they were doing at 10:17 a.m. Thursday for the annual Great California ShakeOut.
About 9.5 million people registered for the fifth annual ShakeOut.
The ShakeOut started in 2008 in Southern California and expanded to the entire state the following year.
The drill is held every year on Oct. 17, the same day the Loma Prieta earthquake struck the Bay Area during a World Series baseball game.
The Great ShakeOut is now observed in states as far east as North Carolina and countries like New Zealand and Japan, according to ShakeOut.org.
