DPS Steps Up Security on Campus

USC has implemented a number of new measures since last year's Halloween shooting.

USC's Department of Public Safety has stepped up security around campus since last year's Halloween shooting.

Four victims were shot at the Tutor Campus Center last October. DPS Chief John Thomas said this time around, there will be some big security changes.

"We'll have extra resources out, more officers out and about," explained Thomas.

USC has implemented a number of new measures since last year, such as fingerprint scanners, gates, and a tiered security system where each event is rated levels one through five. Level five security means the most security staffing and the most expensive fees.

"We are bogged down by the amount of money that's needed to pay for DPS specifically at events like Conquest, Springfest, and the Welcome Back concert," said Lamar Gary, the Director of Diversity Affairs.
