LAUSD Evaluates Superintendent Deasy's Performance

Deasy's current contract goes through June 2015 by a resignation or a negative performance review.

Los Angeles Unified School District Board Members evaluated Superintendent John Deasy's performance over the past year Tuesday night.

Last Thursday, Deasy suggested he might resign in February.

At Tuesday's meeting, more than 200 parents and supporters showed up to demand Deasy stay in his post.

"He's putting the children at the forefront of every decision," said Rene Rodman, a parent and supporter of Deasy. "We know that change is difficult, we know it takes a long time, we know there's a lot of work to be done, but he started the work and we want to complete it."

LAUSD's performance meter reported Deasy had increased graduation rates by more than 15 percent in the last four years. He's increased the proficiency rate of English language learners, offered AP courses and made it mandatory for every student to take A through G courses to graduate high school.

"Sixty-six percent of school suspensions at one point were predominantly African American students," explained Ryan Smith, the Education Director of United Way. "He has made sure that number has gone down."

The board will extend his contract another year if feedback is positive.

"If we, they, really want to focus on student achievement, all of the teachers need to be included and address all the needs, the lack of resources in the classrooms in order for students to succeed," complained Juan Ramirez, the Vice President of United Teachers Los Angles.

Deasy's current contract goes through June 2015, but could be cut short by a negative performance review or a resignation.
