Pirates attacked an American oil platform supply vessel and kidnapped both the captain and chief engineer.

The 222-foot American vessel named C-Retriever is owned by Edison Chouest Offshore, a Louisiana-based company.

The ship and 11 other members of the crew were released. A U.S. defense official said the U.S. Marine Corps has a training unit in the area and is monitoring the situation.

It is unclear whether a ransom demand has been made.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
