USC SCALE Holds Vigil for Garment Workers
Students Wednesday night will honor the workers in Bangladesh who died when a garment factory buiding collapsed last spring.
The Student Coalition Against Labor Exploitation (SCALE) is hosting the candlelight vigil at the University Religious Center Courtyard at 7 p.m. at 835 West 34th Street.
The organization wants students to pay their respects and be aware of the Rana Plaza Factory fire collapse in Bangladesh where more than 1,100 workers died. SCALE says the collapse occurred because the factory did not meet official safety standards.
SCALE wants to meet with President Nikias to discuss USC changing its code of conduct to ensure the production of Trojan apparel brands meets higher safety standards.
According to a statement from V.P. of Student Affairs Michael L. Jackson, the standards of USC-licensed vendors are among the most stringent in higher education.
