Students Use Balloon Images to Map Alumni Park

A group of USC students released mapping balloons as part of a class experiment Wednesday.

Students at the University of Southern California launched their own mapping balloons Wednesday to capture images from the sky.

A 10 ft. wide balloon was launched, taking still images of the ground every two seconds. The field experiment also implemented the use of a Go-Pro attached to the balloon.

Participants hope to bring awareness to the subject in honor of Worldwide Geographic Information day.

USC will compile over 400 images taken during the experiment to create a large mapping project of Alumni Park.
