'Jamzilla' 405 Closure Coming this Weekend

The northbound lanes of the 405 Freeway will be closed for repavement.

If you were planning on taking a trip north this Presidents Day weekend, think again.

Jamzilla is coming, which means the city will close the northbound lanes of the freeway for 80 hours this weekend starting Friday at 7 p.m. for repavement.

The closure will restrict traffic from the Getty Center to Ventura to two lanes during the day and the entire section at night.

The L.A. Metro strongly encourages drivers to avoid the 405 this weekend—unless they enjoy driving in traffic—because it would take hours just to go a few miles.

The city plans to open the 405 back up at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, when everyone is back to school and work and no longer has the luxury of a long weekend to take a leisurely trip to north Los Angeles.

The city opted to shut down the lanes to construction over one 80-hour period rather than several 55-hour periods, hoping to only affect drivers' lives for the long vacation weekend, when they could be traveling, instead of a few other normal weekends.

Not many people felt the closure would make any difference in the freeway's problems.

"They've been working on the 405 for so long but I haven't seen any progress," said L.A. driver Madison Keavy.

L.A. Metro told people to "note that construction is a dynamic process and is subject to change without notice" and thanked people for their patience and cooperation.

However, some students have not been feeling very patient with the closure.

"I'm not going to go over there this weekend because of it," said Alexa Liacko, rolling her eyes. "It's annoying. I wish the 405 were finally finished because I can't go anywhere because of it."

Other students simply had no idea what the fuss was all about.

"When I first heard the phrase Jamzilla I thought it was an app," said Jimmy Guido.

Basically everyone should avoid going north on the 405 this weekend. In the words of Caltrans, "Don't say we didn't warn you."
