L.A. City Council Committee Supports E-Cigarette Ban

E-cigarettes may soon be banned in Los Angeles public venues.

E-cigarettes may soon be banned in public venues where tobacco-smoking is restricted if the Los Angeles City Council approves a new ordinance.

The Arts, Parks, Health, Aging and River Committee agreed Monday to approve the ordinance, bringing the vote to city council.

The city will vote on the issue next week, where they will determine whether or not e-cigarettes have the same potentially harmful consequences as traditional cigarettes.

"Initial studies found that [e-cigarettes] have formaldehyde, benzene and tobacco-specific nitrosamines, which are cancer-causing chemicals," said Marlene Gomez, an American Lung Association representative.

If approved, e-cigarettes would be banned from places such as farmers' markets, parks, beaches, bars and nightclubs.
