The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council voted 13-3 in favor of a rule change that would distinguish the community from the eastern part of the city Wednesday night.

Anne-Marie Johnson, a member of the Silver Lake neighborhood council said, "Historically, the city has referred to cities on the east side as east of the Los Angeles River, so Boyle Heights and Lincoln Heights are areas that are on the east side of the river."

The vote came after residents of Boyle Heights and Lincoln Heights voiced their dissatisfation with Echo Park and Silver Lake being considered an  "Eastside" community even though they lie on the west of the river.

Johnson also said Silver Lake is known for being an artist refuge for "individuals who weren't allowed in other areas, who weren't allowed in Beverly Hills, who are gay, Catholic and looked down upon."
