Viewing Map on Cellphone While Driving Now Legal, Court Says

An appeals court decision holds that "talking and listening" are prohibited while driving, not viewing a map.

A ruling by a California court on Thursday makes it legal to view a map on a cellphone while driving.

The ruling by the 5th District Court of Appeals reverses a January 2012 ticket against Fresno rsident Steven Spriggs.

Sprigs was cited $165 for looking at his phone's map while driving.

The 18-page ruling said the current law banning use of cellphones while driving only applies to "talking and listening" but does not include viewing cellphone maps.
