High Schoolers Celebrate Brain Awareness Week

UCLA's science department provided high schoolers with an interactive learning experience.

UCLA gave middle and high school students from five different schools the opporunity to examine the brain at UCLA's Neuroscience and Genetics Research Center. The high school students were given the chance to touch a preserved human brain and explore its physical features.

This interactive experience is meant to employ the knowledge the students learn in school. One student said, "I actually learned a lot, they were asking us what does this lobe do, and what's over here, and I'm like 'Oh, I know what that does'."

The 60 leadership science students were also able to examine animal brains, the Nervous System, and could even toss around brains at certain stations. The teachers goal in organizing the event is not strictly science-related. One of the UCLA professors said that the experience gives teachers the chance to get to know students in the community and vice versa.
