Public Transit Use in U.S. Reaches Highest Level Since 1956
A report by the American Public Transportation shows that ridership in Los Angeles has increased 6 percent since 2012. The L.A. Metro reached 9 million trips by the end of 2013. Some people believe the accessibility and price of the city's metro and bus lines have attracted more riders.
Bumper to bumber traffic and a rise in gas prices have also encouraged people to consider other options. A metro representative says that public transportation is not only cost effective, but also environmentally friendly. Public transportation is a sustainable form of transit because it reduces the carbon dioxide released into the air.
However, some people find this form of transportation too inconvenient. Los Angeles citizens have complained that the metro and bus systems are not ideal because there are not optimal routes to arrive at a specific location. To change this, the L.A. metro is currently expanding rail lines in Pasadena, Culver City, and East Los Angeles.
