SoCal Reacts to 6.8-Magnitude Earthquake
A 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit fifty miles west of Eureka. The reports did not indicate damage or injuries, but here have since been more than twenty aftershocks with a magnitude of 3.5 or larger and more are expected to occur in the next few days.
"We know it's a very active area, so you know it's safe to assume there's another big one sometime," said Caltech Seismologist Kate Hutton. "But we don't have any way of knowing that." She added that in addition to garnering food and shelter, retrofitting buildings should be a priority. The concern is where to acquire the funding as well as the motivation. "Since it's a possibly far in the future threat, there's a lot more immediate things that grab the fund first," said Hutton.
Hutton also warned that older college dorms, like Fluor Tower, can be extremely vulnerable to earthquakes. USC Housing assures that all of the buildings are up to code.
