Denim Day Aims to Curb Sexual Assault

Advocates and victims say the status quo needs to change, because one in five American women will experience some sort of sexual violence.

Across Los Angeles on Wednesday, advocates, students and public safety leaders wore jeans to commemorate Denim Day and raise awareness about rape and sexual violence.

One in five American women will experience some sort of sexual violence. And 60 percent of those attacks go unreported. Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said these statistics should serve as a wakeup call.

"Why are they afraid to report? Becuase they think they have no voice," Beck said. "The status quo is unacceptable."

The Vice Provost and the Executive Director of the Women's Student Assembly talked about efforts to combat sexual violence on campus.

Many students on campus said the campaign promotes sexual assault awareness and believe it would benefit the entire Trojan community.

Denim Day is organized by Peace Over Violence, an LA-based organization that has held the awareness-raising event for the last 15 years.
