Five Things to Remember from Mayor Garcetti's 'State of the City'

Garcetti said the DWP will not increase rates this year.

1. The Department of Water and Power will not be allowed to raise rates this year.

"This department must earn back your trust," said Garcetti.

2. Mayor Garcetti pledged to keep creating jobs for Angelenos.

"A well-run city relies on a strong economy," said Garcetti. "City Hall has too often been a place where jobs go to die [...] you shouldn't have to hire a lobbyist to open a business in Los Angeles."

Garcetti said he focuses on developing key industries, helping the workforce develop new skills, cutting the business tax, and making City Hall more business friendly.

3.  He revealed a plan to make sure local adolescents are ready to fill these jobs.

"The responsibility for educating our children should not rest solely in our schools," said Garcetti.

His plans include the Summer of Learning plan, that will offer skills-based classes for job training and to build resumes for future employers and the Summer Night Lights program, that gives young people a safe place to go at night.

4. The city will make sure L.A. is ready for the next big earthquake.

"The cost of being unprepared is much, much higher," said Garcetti.

He revealed plans to prepare the city for earthquakes by upgrading old buildings.

5. The city will become more environmentally friendly.

The Green Streets Initiative will make streets more accessible to pedestrians.

Fifteen streets, one in each city council district, have already signed on.

By 2020 he pledged that renewable resources will account for 1/3 of energy and he will cut water imports by 1/2.

"To fix City Hall we won't rely on the same old tired approach," said Garcetti. "We are Los Angeles and we do big things."
