Investigators Look Into Alleged LAPD Shooter's Motive
Police said it's a miracle the officer shot at the LAPD West Traffic Division in Mid-City is still alive.
"It is an amazing story that he will be here with us," said Chief Charlie Beck. "He was struck twice in the shoulder, once in the side, and took a round that would've gone through his femur and maybe his femoral artery...but that round was stopped by his backup weapon that he had in his pocket."
The suspect walked into the station lobby, said he had a complaint, and then shot at the two desk officers.
The wounded officer is in the hospital but in good spirits. He was not wearing a bulletproof vest during the incident.
"With the injuries that he had, not only did he have this smile on his face, but he shook hands with that arm today," said Police Commissioner President Steve Soboroff. "His protective vest was whoever you believe in, your God, but that's who his vest was."
The man accused of shooting the LAPD Officer has been identified as Daniel Yealu.
LAPD confirmed the suspect in Monday night's shooting once applied to the LAPD Police Academy but was not hired.
Police searched the suspect's home and car. They found several weapons and clips of ammunition.
