USC Under Federal Investigation for Title IX Violation

USC is among a list of 55 U.S. colleges being investigated by the Department of Education for Title IX violations regarding sexual assault.
The list was released Thursday by the recommendation of the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault.
Title IX is a law passed in 1972 that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and other programs funded by the government. Under the law, sexual harrassment and violence are considered discrimination.
The Department of Education released a statement saying, "We are making this list available in an effort to bring more transparency to our enforcement work and to foster public awareness of civil rights."
Among the schools on the list are UC Berkeley, Harvard University and Occidental College.
The charges come after students complained that USC was covering up sexual assault cases in order to keep crime statistics low.
USC said it would not be commenting on the issue.
