Chinese Students Demand More Effective Safety Measures

Chinese students and scholars at USC ask President Max Nikias to reevaluate campus safety efforts.

Following the murder of USC graduate student Xinran Ji, Chinese students and scholars at USC are demanding more effective efforts to ensure student safety. Ji’s death was the second deadly attack involving Chinese USC students. In April 2012, Ying Wu and Ming Qu, both USC graduate students were fatally shot.

According to China Daily, the USC Chinese Students and Scholars Association (USC CSSA) wrote an open letter Thursday to USC President Max Nikias, outlining their requests. The letter proposed several safety measures, including the installation of additional street surveillance cameras and emergency call boxes.

"We respectfully request that the university administration carefully consider these requests in order to provide greater security for students, and to help improve the general public's opinion of the USC neighborhood as a safe place for students and for the public at large when attending events in the area," the USC CSSA wrote.

Neon Tommy reports USC’s Department of Public Safety is currently evaluating campus security. Deputy Chief David Carlisle said, “ We are now reviewing our policies, procedures, and officers, which includes our security ambassadors. Nothing is off the table when it comes to students’ safety.”

COMMENTS

Being a parent of a current USC student, I am every concern about the safety of my child. Couple of years after the murder of 2 Chinese students, USC promised extra/tighter security and this time same promise is made. According to information from my child, there was no apparent extra/tighter security on campus after the 2012 murder. This time around, same promise is made.......I hope this will not be empty promise at the expense of Chinese or other student lives.
