Sunset Blvd. Reopens After Two Water Main Breaks
Sunset Boulevard opened Monday after the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power worked all weekend to resolve two water breaks over the weekend.
Traveling down Sunset Boulevard was nearly impossible this past weekend after water breaks on Friday and Sunday slowed down businesses and congested traffic.
CBS Los Angeles reported that the break on Friday came in the afternoon at Sunset and La Cienega with 9,600 gallons pouring out per minute. The 36-inch pipe that gave way is a part of the old infrastructure dating back to 1916.
One resident got caught in the immediate fallout of the water damage on his way to run an errand. ATVN's Andrea Martinez spoke to an L.A. resident, who said he spent so much time in traffic that by the time he got out of it, he ditched his plans to go surfing, to just relax at home.
The second water break on Sunday came from another old pipe that was built back in 1969. Officials of the area weren't expecting the streets to be up and running until Tuesday, but they are accessible now.
While there wasn't any property damage, businesses on Sunset Boulevard took a big hit in the aftermath of the water breaks.
Store owner Sol Yamini said his business took the biggest hit because of his drivers' inability to efficiently conduct their deliveries. After the break occurred, Yamini said it took nearly six to seven hours before they could send out a single delivery.
While business isn't completely back to normal, store owners are finding more and more of their customers returning and expect their stores to return to normalcy later this week.
