Alumna Astrid Solorzano Visits the Media Center

Former ATVN anchor visited the Media Center on vacation from reporting at KTHV in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Recent USC Annenberg graduate Astrid Solorzano visited the Media Center Tuesday, where she talked about her experiences as a journalism student at USC and as a multimedia journalist in a medium-sized news market.

Solorzano, who graduated May 2014 from Anneberg’s Master’s of Science in Journalism program, currently works for KTVH in Little Rock, Arkansas. As a multimedia journalist she films, edits and writes. She said she had the same responsibilities when she worked at ATVN.

Solorzano told us that ATVN taught her to be extroverted, to meet deadlines, and to edit video. She thinks her ability to edit video made her more marketable to employers. Looking back, Solano said she loved the sense of unity at ATVN. “At the end of the day, a news team is a team,” she said.

Her advice to current students involved with ATVN is to work hard during media shifts. “When you’re here think of it as a real job. If you always give it 100 percent, you will see progress,” she said.

Solorzano urged reporters specifically to be creative with their stand-ups and use several angles. “It will make you stand out. People want to see action,” she said.
