City Council Approves Rabbit Microchipping Measure
The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Tuesday in favor of a measure that requires all pet rabbits in the city to carry microchips.
The expense of microchipping the pets will increase the cost of adopting a rabbit from $56 to $71. The revenue from microchipping will be funneled into the Electronic Animal Identification Device Revolving Fund, part of the city’s general fund.
Animal shelters hope the microchips will help reunite stray rabbits with their owners. The chips will also assist the Animal Services Department in identifying situations of animal cruelty.
