L.A. Leads in High-Tech Jobs
Los Angeles Innovation Week kicked off Monday with encouraging news about the growing high-tech sector in L.A. County.
On Monday, local officials released the “High Tech in L.A.” report, which found that Los Angeles has nearly 370,000 high-tech jobs— more than Boston, New York and Silicon Valley's Santa Clara County. According the report, Los Angeles has more employees in this field than any other metro region in the nation.
“Los Angeles’ tech industry is now as critical to our economy as our manufacturing and entertainment sectors—and we are outperforming New York, Boston, and Santa Clara County, in the heart of Silicon Valley,” said Mayor Garcetti. “If we want to keep it that way, we must ensure our workforce and our students are prepared.”
The high-tech jobs in L.A. have also generated more than $21 million dollars in tax revenue for federal, state and local governments.
The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), along with L.A. County, created a week full of events to showcase creativity and innovation in areas like digital media, aerospace, gaming space commercialization, transportation and others.
On Monday and Tuesday, the city will host GloSho, an event sponsored by L.A. CleanTech Incubator, that will connect policymakers with attendees to discuss breakthroughs in technology and global strategy. On Wednesday, Gensler Los Angeles will feature a panel on urban growth in Downtown L.A. It will be followed by a hackathon at the Los Angeles Public Library.
Thursday's events include an interactive conference, TechOut L.A., along with a startup mixer sponsored by Google. The week will wrap up with a conference on game development and an open house at the Mars Science Laboratory.
