Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti signed an executive directive on Tuesday, calling for a 20 percent reduction in the city’s fresh water use by 2017 and a 50 percent cut in the amount of imported water purchased by 2024.

Garcetti said that treating groundwater, storing stormwater, using recycled water, employing conservative strategies and creating green infrastructure are important steps to reaching the reduction goals.

The state has faced a record-setting drought in the past year.

“We cannot afford the water policies of the past," said Garcetti, according to City News Service. "We must conserve, recycle and
rethink how we use our water to save money and make sure that we have enough water to keep L.A. growing."

A “Mayor’s Water Cabinet” led by Deputy Mayor Doane Liu will be working on the issue to make sure the city meets the goal.

Here are some tips for the public to reserve water:

-water lawns only twice a week

-replace grass with water friendly plants

-use a pool cover to avoid evaporation

-use high-efficiency home appliances

-use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveway
