Ramon Cortines Returns as LAUSD Interim Superintendent
Today was the first day for the new superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Ramon C. Cortines. Cortines will serve as interim superintendent until a permanent successor is found to replace Dr. John Deasy who resigned on Thursday.
This is not the first time Cortines has lead the LAUSD as he resigned in 2011 amid sexual harassment allegations against him.
Tensions between Deasy and the LAUSD led to the former superintendents resignation. Thomas Jefferson High School was one school in specific that faced problems under his leadership. Issues they encountered included overcrowded classrooms and students inability to get all of the classes they needed to graduate in time.
The LAUSD is the second largest school district in the nation with over 64,000 students.
