Healthy Eating Sprouting In Los Angeles
Tuesday, in honor of National Food Day, the Los Angeles Food Policy Council hosted the Food Day Celebration at City Hall in Downtown Los Angeles. The theme this year is called “Collective Impact!”
Urban farmers came to share and offer samples of their produce with guests. The events encouraged the community to eat healthy and pushed to improve food policies within the community.
National Food Day, which is this Friday, encourages Americans to improve their diets in addition to improving the food industry. The efforts strive to bring communities together to celebrate and enjoy good food.
Through collective efforts, this program hopes to make Los Angeles a Good Food City for all Angelenos where food is healthy, affordable, sustainable and fair. Attendees were highly educated on how to begin a personal garden and take advantage of the benefits of homegrown food.
Guest Speakers at the event included Councilmembers Mitch O’Farrell, Curren Price, Nury Martinez, Paul Koretz and School Board Member Steve Zimmer.
The city recently passed a new law that grants tax breaks to owners of vacant lots who turn them over to urban farms for at least five years.
Although Food Day isn’t until Friday, organizations are welcome to host events throughout the week.
