LGBT Center In LA Aims to Help Transgender Community Get Jobs
The Los Angeles LGBT Center hosted its third-annual job fair at the National Council of Jewish Women Center on Monday. There, companies like Toyota, Vons and New York Life met with and reviewed resumes for the transgender individuals who attended the fair.
The L.A. LGBT center, considered one of the largest of its kind in the world, is one of the resources members of the transgender community have when looking for employment opportunities.
According to the Injustice at Every Turn report, more than half of the transgender community has experienced discrimination in the workforce. The community also has twice as many unemployed members than the national average.
One transgender woman, Jennifer Taylor, has felt for some time like the whole world was against her. Before her transition she never found trouble getting a job. However, she said that she was often criticized for not "acting like a man in business." Being unemployed brought her to the center Monday.
Taylor feels that many transgenders are discouraged upon meeting employers out of fear of judgement. Now she aims for a job in TV production. Aside from her career goal, she'd also like to see all people see the transgender community as both professional and hard-working.
