Man Dies at Frat House Near UC Berkeley
Police are investigating the death of 20-year-old man at the Zeta Psi fraternity house near UC Berkeley. The young man, who is not a UC Berkeley student was found dead on Sunday just outside the campus, according to a report by the L.A. Times. He was found unresponsive and declared dead at the scene.
Detectives, who are investigating the incident say the death was “suspicious” and are trying to determine whether or not it is linked to foul play. Police haven’t ruled out drugs and alcohol as possible factors.
There is no word yet on how long the man was dead before police arrived. No citations have been given to the fraternity for parties but police say they have responded to the house before. According to UC Berkeley, Zeta Psi was not recognized by the university and therefore not subject to oversight.
While the student wasn't from UC Berkeley, one student says it has affected most of the collegiate community there.
“It’s all that’s on everyone’s mind, at least in the Greek community because nothing this drastic has ever occurred before,” said a sorority member from the school, who asked to remain anonymous.
Students say the incident may have ripple effects.
"There’s a pretty big movement away from alcohol and fraternities. They want to keep the social organization, but they want to take all alcohol out of the picture, for liability reasons,” said an anonymous fraternity member at Berkeley.
