USC Public Safety Officials Urge Caution After FedEx Collision
Students are taking caution after a FedEx truck hit a pedestrian Wednesday night near the intersection of University and 28th Street.
The pedestrian, a USC student, was crossing through the intersection when a FedEx truck hit him, according to the USC Department of Public Safety.
The truck driver immediately stopped to help, and the student was transported to California Hospital.
The USC Department of Public Safety’s Deputy Chief David Carlisle says that pedestrians pose a specific danger while crossing the street.
“It’s up to students to be careful,” Carlisle said. “You can’t count on the cars.”
Despite Wednesday night’s accident, Carlisle says the intersection of University and 28th Street is not particularly unsafe.
“Surprisingly, we don’t have that many collisions reported there. Probably because students, for the most part, are being safe.”
USC senior Andy Boelter agrees that the intersection is safe but thinks the biggest problem is that most pedestrians and bikers aren’t paying attention.
“I think there are very few students who stop for the cars,” Boelter said. “If cars didn’t stop, I wouldn’t stop.”
USC student Lindsey Cook said the streets in the intersection near the accident can cause confusion to drivers and bikers.
“[The intersection] is a little crazy,” Cook said. “The streets don’t match up, and I feel like pedestrians don’t really stop for cars.”
The LAPD southwest traffic bureau is investigating the cause of Wednesday night’s accident.
