UC Berkeley Student Found Dead Near USC Campus
Friends and family are mourning the loss of UC Berkeley student, Eloi Vasquez who fatally struck by a car on the 10 freeway early Saturday morning. Vasquez was last seen leaving the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity House near USC. He told his friends he wanted to go for walk but never returned.
After his disapperance, his family posted flyers around campus and offered a $100,000 reward for the safe return of Vasquez. On Monday, officials confirmed that he was found dead, just blocks away from where he was last seen.
LAPD says Vasquez wandered onto the 10 freeway near Vermont and Washington. He was hit by a car heading eastbound at about 60 miles per hour. The driver stopped but it was too late. The California Highway Patrol says Vasquez died on scene.
Although Vasquez died early Saturday morning, his body was not identified until Monday. The Coroner's Office says at first his fingerprint didn't come in the system and they didn't realize his last name was hyphenated.
"He was super talented loved everyone. He was kind and brave. He was a great role model for his younger brothers," his cousin Paul Crespan said.
As his family mourns his death, the Coroner's Office is working to figure out whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the death of Eloi Vasquez.
