Thousands Of Corinthian Colleges Students Cope With Closings

Nicole Noe moved all over from West Virginia to study at Everest College, where she was just two months away from graduating. Now the college has closed.

Nicole Noe moved to California from West Virginia to study at Everest College, an for-profit institution that is part of Corinthian Colleges, Inc.

On Sunday morning, she received an email from the school saying that the institution would permanently be shut down the next day.

Part of the email reads: "It is with great sadness and regret that we must inform you that effective Monday, April 27, Corinthian Colleges, the parent organization for Heald College, Everest College, WyoTech, and Everest College Phoenix, will cease operations and that your campus will be closed.  We are in the process of trying to arrange partnerships with other colleges and universities that would enable you to complete your studies."

Monday morning several students showed up to Everest College thinking it was just a normal day of school.

"I came to class and they gave me this piece of paper saying that we are closed today and that I should come back on Wednesday. They weren't even apologetic, nobody talked to me," said Zachary Peña, a student almost about to graduate.

Noe, as many others, had to take out loans to pay for school. Now, she doesnt know what to do.

According to the Department of Education, students may get a full refund if they qualify, or they can transfer credits to another college which will accept them.

The vice president of Student Services at Los Angeles Trade Tech College in South L.A. says students who want to transfer have to get their transcripts evaluated to see which of the credits they completed would be comparable to courseat the college.

We tried to reach out Corinthian Colleges but the call went to an automated message saying that the line was permanently disconnected.
