"D-Day For Veterans" Tries To Help Homeless Vets

The Los Angeles National Council Coalition headed to Skid Row in order to help homeless veterans sign up for the benefits they deserve.

Local community groups reached out to the homeless veterans on Skid Row Thursday. Their move to help veterans was in response to city officials' declaration of a state of emergency on homelessness this past Tuesday.

The Los Angeles National Council Coalition held a "D-Day for the Veterans" in efforts to move homeless veterans off the street and into more stable housing. With the help of other outreach groups, the LANCC arranged for buses to transport homeless vets to Westwood, so they could obtain proper identification cards and move into transitional housing.

While there have been many attempts in the past to end homelessness in Los Angeles, the number of homeless continues to grow.

Greg Spiegel, the Homelessness Policy Director for Mayor Eric Garcetti, says this issue is a matter of concern to everyone, and should be handled as such.

"The extent which [homelessness] exists reflects the extent which we as a society and as a community has failed each other."

Monica Alcaraz says that the hardest part is not necessarily getting housing for the homeless, but the real challenge is actually keeping them in stable housing.

"If you're used to being around a lot of people, and now all of a sudden you're in your own apartment and there's nobody there…depression can really set in. So there's a lot of underlying issues that need to be addressed and we need these supportive services [for them]."

The city has pledged $100 million towards ending the problem. Veterans are hoping that this, along with the services offered through various outreach groups, will be help alleviate the problem in the long-run.

"Transitional Housing" always means prison-like jammed-packed shelters, with forced "Jesus Saves" and mandatory 12-Step religious AA/NA cult nonsense shoved down the veteran's throats 24/7...
