Disney CEO Joins Los Angeles NFL Venture

Bob Iger to lead Chargers and Raiders Stadium Project in Carson.

Today Carson Holdings Inc., the group constructing the NFL stadium in Carson, Calif., announced Disney CEO Bob Iger will lead the project that could bring two pro football teams to Los Angeles. A deal between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders would result in both teams relocating.

Today the Chargers, Raiders and the St. Louis Rams met at the NFL headquarters in New York to discuss a potential move. The Rams have proposed a $1.86 billion stadium plan in Inglewood, Calif. to rival the anticipated $1.7 billion stadium in Carson. It’s been 21 years since L.A. had an NFL team. The Rams and the Raiders both left in 1994.

The San Diego mayor, Kevin Faulconer, is scheduled to present at the New York meeting to convince team owners that the Chargers should stay in San Diego.

Iger said yesterday in a statement that if the owners of the Chargers and Raiders approve the move to L.A., “Los Angeles will proudly welcome two incredible teams to our community and build a stadium worthy of their fans.”

Many Carson residents are excited about the possibility that two NFL teams, for the price of one, could call Los Angeles their new home. Longtime resident, Leon Jefferson, 56, is enthusiastic about the possibility of his favorite team coming to L.A.

“It’s a great thing for a football team to come to the City of Carson,” Jefferson said. “We need a team here. Go Raiders!”

Michelle Riggs, 45, thinks a football team in Carson would substantially help her city. “It would bring jobs to our community and we haven’t had a football team here in a long time, and were all football fans, and we welcome a team to our city.”

The NFL is expected to announce their decision in January. Until then, the city of Carson remains hopeful.
