USC unable to cool off Oregon

Mental mistakes and stellar play by their opponent doomed the USC Trojans on the road.

The USC Trojans were unable to overcome the spectacular play of Oregon Ducks quarterback Vernon Adams and lost at Autzen Stadium, 48-28.  The Trojans’ final road game was full of mental mistakes and lapses in execution.

Adams carved up the Trojan defense to the tune of 407 yards on 20 completions, and notched six touchdowns.  His ability to evade pass rushers and make continue looking downfield gave USC fits all afternoon.

Oregon running back Royce Freeman also went off against the USC defense that came into the game improved in terms of stopping the run.  Freeman ran wild for 147 yards rushing and continually punished USC.

The Ducks went into halftime with a 31-14 lead, and built on that in the second half with a quick score on their first drive, making it 38-14.  USC was able to battle back a bit, closing the deficit to ten points at the end of the third quarter, 38-28.

Penalties doomed the Trojans, however, and they were unable to get any closer.  A couple of penalties on both the offense and defense buried USC in the fourth quarter and Oregon came up victorious.

The Trojans ended the game with 12 penalties for 124 yards.  It was those penalties that negated the 141-yard effort from USC running back Justin Davis.

Cody Kessler also contributed 238 yards and two touchdowns.  He was also sacked five times and faced pressure all game from a motivated Oregon defensive front seven.

Though USC lost, they are still in the hunt for the Pac-12 South Division title with UCLA winning against Utah in the afternoon.

The Trojans faceoff against the Bruins next week in their final game of the regular season with everything on the line.
