Julia Deng
Reporter, Multimedia JournalistJulia Deng is a sophomore from New York double-majoring in Broadcast and Digital Journalism and Political Science. Initially on the print journalism track, she switched her major - and career goals - after spending four months in South Africa, where she interned at Cape Town TV News and led the production of a package exploring the Hangberg eviction crisis.
Now in her third semester at ATVN, Julia works as a reporter and multimedia journalist. She began as a volunteer at the assignment desk, but soon made her way into the field and edit bay when she joined the 2011 news team as the fall semester's youngest reporter. Julia has covered the Conrad Murray trial, Occupy LAUSD, and the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
In addition to her duties at ATVN, Julia reports for Annenberg Radio News and is on the executive board of the USC Political Student Assembly as this year’s Media Director. Last summer, she worked at NBC Bay Area as a news intern. Memorable assignments include coordinating updates in the Michelle Le case, interviewing victims of contaminated Crystal Geyser water with reporter George Kiriyama, and shadowing award-winning meteorologists Rob Mayeda and Christina Loren.
Prior to discovering her passion for journalism, Julia was intent on pursuing a career in classical music. She studied violin at The Juilliard School for six years, and is always thrilled to cover stories related to the arts.
When she is not in the Annenberg basement, Julia can be found baking gluten-free desserts and expanding her scrapbook of The New Yorker cartoons.
